Susan authored numerous books, including the well-known home school resource: The Well Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home co-authored with her mother, Jessie Bauer and published by WW Norton. Taking advantage of a local homeschool fair in Chandler, Arizona, we bo. What I Think: I would like to start by saying that I believe in and follow the basics of a classical education in my own home. Their guides are big and have tons of info and scripting in them. The early years of school are spent in absorbing facts, systematically laying the foundations for advanced study. Although I file this post as a review, I cannot really review The Well-Trained Mind: The Guide to Classical Education at Home by Susan Wise Bauer and her mother Jessie Wise (third edition, 2009). With BJU, I think the Teacher's Guide is needed. I got confused because when I read The Well-Trained Mind, SWB recommends curricula that are not specifically classical, meaning that those curricula, for the subjects she recommends them for, did fine for that subject using the classical method in that subject. I'm actually going to start a book club of sorts at Living and Learning at Home for discussing it. Some are full time traditional week and some choose a university model two days a week for the younger ones where the parent helps guide work at home the other 3 days of the school week. The Well-Trained Mind is to me a layman's guide to implementing classical education. Well, Vertias Press has curricula that has literature which is partially tied to history but also offers other selections but does not follow the 4 year cycle. Classical education depends on a three-part process of training the mind. A book that has helped many homeschooling families learn how they can actually give their children a classical education at home is a book that I have read: The Well Trained Mind by Susan Bauer. Years ago before our first child was born, while my husband and I were in the US we explored the possibilities of homeschooling.
